August 16, 2023: Cabot said on August 9 it was partnering the US Department of Energy in a national energy efficiency drive for major industrial firms.

The battery materials company is joining the DOE’s voluntary ‘Better Plants’ program to boost its own plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Under the program, manufacturers commit to reducing energy intensity of their operations by 25% over a 10-year period.

All of Cabot’s current US-based manufacturing sites are part of the program, which has more than 280 partners representing every major US industrial sector.

The DOE said partners share proven energy-efficiency strategies and best practices.

Cabot, which is a member of the Consortium for Battery Innovation, also has application testing capabilities for lead acid batteries at its research and development facility in Massachusetts.

In March, Cabot announced plans to open a new lab in Germany to help boost lithium ion battery tech for EVs.

The company said in April it had bought the Chiba solar farm in Japan, near its carbon black manufacturing plant, to expand into renewable power generation as part of its sustainability drive.
