October 11, 2023: Carbon black manufacturer Birla Carbon said today it had acquired carbon nanotube firm Nanocyl to strengthen its presence in the lithium battery materials sector.
Belgium-based Nanocyl specializes in the production of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).
Birla president and CEO John Loudermilk said MWCNTs had the potential to boost environmental benefits as part of the electrification of the transportation industry.
Nanocyl CEO Laurent Kosbach said after 20 years since launching as an entrepreneurial start-up”, the time had come to “maximize the synergies and potential” of its products and their applications.
He said Birla’s R&D expertise, product range, and market experience would enable Nanocyl to reach its full growth potential.
In September 2021, Birla said it was entering the energy systems sector with an additive designed for lead and lithium batteries.
Last year, Birla announced it was also investing in a pilot anode graphite manufacturing and post-processing plant in the US, with a view to ramping up supplies for the increasing demand for EV batteries.
