August 30, 2023: Gravita India said on August 29 the group had started commercial production of lead at its battery recycling plant in the West African nation of Togo.
Gravita said its facility in the country has an annual recycling capacity of about 6,000 million tonnes per annum.
The Togo subsidiary has been sourcing domestic scrap for the past three years and has already established a strong collection network for used batteries, Gravita said.
The lead recycling group has similar recycling operations in Tanzania, Senegal, Mozambique, Sri Lanka and Ghana in addition to its India plants.
The company also has an aluminium recycling plant in Togo that has an annual capacity of capacity of 4,000 MTPA.
In June, Batteries International reported that Gravita had expanded lead battery recycling capacity at its Chittoor facility from 26,440 MTPA to 64,640 MTPA.
That increase took the group’s overall recycling capacity to more than 278,000 MTPA — putting Gravita on course to hit its overall target of 425,000 MTPA by fiscal 2026.
