November 10, 2022: India’s Amara Raja Batteries announced the launch of a new subsidiary on November 3 to spearhead the addition of lithium ion tech to its lead battery manufacturing operations.
The company said in February 2021 that it would start developing lithium ion cells.
Vikramadithya Gourineni, executive director of the company’s new energy business division, said the launch of its Advanced Energy Storage Technologies subsidiary would allow the company to expand into lithium while simultaneously paving the way for “larger investments and technical collaborations”.
Gourineni said Amara Raja was finalizing the selection of a site for the subsidiary’s “multi-gigawatt” battery cells facility and the location would be confirmed soon.
The facility will produce battery cells and packs for the e-mobility and stationary energy storage systems.
Chairman and MD Jayadev Galla (pictured) said: “Amara Raja has been setting the standards in battery technology for over three decades and we are confident that Li-on will be no different.
“We have articulated a clear roadmap for building technology capabilities, investments in R&D and for establishing giga capacities.”
But Galla stressed that the company was still committed to expanding its lead batteries business.
