January 11, 2024: Lead battery recycler Gopher Resource has restarted operations at its Eagan facility in Minnesota following a fire, the company announced on January 4.
Gopher said last month that there were no reported injuries as a result of the fire on December 17.
Recycling resumed on January 1 after what Gopher said was a period of downtime while the firm worked to complete unspecified repairs.
The fire was fully contained and extinguished quickly thanks to the Eagan Fire Department and assisting agencies and all employees were evacuated safely, Gopher said.
In addition to Eagan, which also operates a community recycling center for Dakota County, Gopher has a lead battery recycling plant in Tampa, Florida.
Last May, Gopher announced it had joined a US government-backed consortium to find new metals processing methods that reduce waste and increase recovery of usable materials.
