August 30, 2024: LG Energy Solution has unveiled plans to ramp up its battery diagnostics software business.

The Korean company said on August 21 it will be marketing safety diagnostics software developed using empirical data from more than 20 years of designing battery management systems.

The software can detect battery defects with an accuracy rate of over 90%, LGES claimed.

The software has already been applied to more than 100,000 EVs. With over 8,000 BMS-related patents, the company said its expertise derives from having disassembled and analyzed more than 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 battery modules.

LGES’ software is mounted on the automotive BMS and can pre-emptively diagnose various battery abnormalities including voltage drop during charging, battery tab failure, micro internal short circuits and abnormal degradation.

The software uses AI and cloud-based technologies to predict and diagnose battery degradation and is already being applied to EVs from nine unnamed global manufacturers, LGES said.

“Although automakers are starting to shift their attention to safety diagnosis technology, it takes time and resources to develop and apply reliable software,” said Hyuksung Chung, VP of the LGES business development group.

“This move aligns with our commitment to actively collaborate with our clients to ensure EV batteries are safe to use.”
