August 2, 2024: Renewable energy firm, Sterling and Wilson has secured a contract to build a 1,000MWh standalone BESS in THE Indian state of Rajasthan, the company reported on July 26.

Once completed in 2025, it will be the largest BESS project in India, and one of the few MWh-scale projects in a single location around the world.

India’s entire installed capacity for BESS is approximately 219MWh and according to the country’s Central Electricity Authority the capacity required for energy storage will be 82GWh in 2026/2027. As a result of the order, Sterling and Wilson will take the lead in the rapidly expanding BESS market in India.

S&W has also procured an order for a 20MW floating solar project in Karnataka making it the third such project the company is working on in India.

Amit Jain, global CEO, said that over the last 12 to 18 months there had been multiple tenders, bids and projects for either standalone storage or hybrid (renewable + storage) in India, making this latest contract an important step for the company and for India to move towards ‘firm dispatchable renewable power.’

“This win depicts our in-house capabilities and knowledge of energy storage plus engineering and execution and places us with a large advantage in the solar and storage market which is likely to grow tremendously in the near future,” he said.
