February 28, 2025: Lead and lithium major Clarios has produced its millionth 12V lithium ion battery, saying it marked a major milestone in its journey to becoming a chemistry-agnostic energy systems supplier.

The company said on February 20 the milestone was achieved on January 30, along with production of six million 10Ah lithium titanate oxide prismatic power cells for batteries critical for vehicles with high electrification, including internal combustion, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

Clarios manufactures LTO cells in the US and assembles systems in Europe. All LTO cells are produced in-house in Michigan.

The production line for Li low-voltage batteries was launched in 2020 at Hanover in Germany. Clarios said that site plays a central role in the firm’s global production strategy and serves as a blueprint for other locations.

Clarios announced last month it had secured a significant contract with a major automotive manufacturer to supply its advanced supercapacitors in a 12V and 48V architecture.

Meanwhile, Clarios is investing around €200 million ($215 million) in its European plants up to 2026 to expand production capacity for AGM vehicle batteries.

As of 2026, around 50% more batteries will be produced each year, the company has said. The biggest expansion of AGM capacity will be at Hanover.
