November 7, 2025: Funding for a new project aimed at accelerating the take-up of vehicle-to-grid tech was given the go-ahead by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) on November 1.

ARENA is contributing A$3.2 million ($2 million to the A$8 million Amber Electric project to install the first of 50 V2G-capable home chargers.
The initiative combines smart charging, rooftop solar, and home batteries with Amber’s wholesale electricity cost pass-through model, allowing customers to optimize energy use and savings.

The project will enable EVs to operate as “batteries on wheels”, turning EVs into more than just a mode of transport and providing Australians with flexibility, savings and increased control over their energy use, ARENA said.

The Amber Electric project is the latest in a series of studies and schemes funded by ARENA since 2019.

The company is also working with Chinese EV major BYD. According to Amber, early results of its technology show value across a range of homes, with a New South Wales household earning A$300 overnight and a household in the state of Victoria earning A$257 in a day.

The trial will also show that V2G with Amber does not affect EV battery health beyond normal driving use, the company said.

Australia’s 2025 National Roadmap for Bidirectional EV Charging sets out the highest-priority government and industry actions required to commercialize V2G in the country by 2030.

ARENA said unlocking V2G is also a core focus under the Driving the Nation Program.

This is a potential game-changer for Australia’s energy system, ARENA CEO Darren Miller said.

“V2G technology has the potential to transform how we think about and deploy energy storage and grid support. By enabling Australians to participate in the energy market through their EVs, we’re unlocking new value streams and building a more resilient, renewable-powered future.”
