January 5, 2026: Tesla is to design, build and commission a 500MW/1GWh BESS in Scotland under a deal with Matrix Renewables.

Matrix said on December 23 it had signed a full engineering, procurement, and construction agreement with Tesla for the facility, which will be Matrix’s first standalone BESS project in the UK.

Full consent has been secured to start construction at the site in Eccles, to provide critical grid flexibility, enable greater renewable integration, and strengthen system resilience, Matrix said.

In addition to marking its entry into the UK market, Matrix said the project represents one of the company’s largest energy storage developments in Europe and globally to date.

Meanwhile, Matrix is looking to expand its UK pipeline across renewable generation, energy storage, and emerging technologies, with plans to add up to 3GW of additional capacity in the coming years.

Matrix is a renewable energy platform created and backed by global alternative asset manager TPG and its $29 billion impact-investing platform. The firm’s portfolio comprises 15.5GW of solar, storage and green hydrogen projects in Europe, the US and Latin America.
