May 20, 2025: Chinese EV battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology has launched an initial public offering in Hong Kong.
The offering period ended on May 16 and CATL listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on May 20. It debuted on the Main Board of HKEX under stock code 3750. The global offering comprised 135 million shares before the greenshoe option (to increase), at a price at HKD 263.00 each, making CATL the first A-share company seeking a secondary listing in Hong Kong with a price cap for the issuance. The stock opened on its first day at HKD 296, reflecting a 12.55% increase, demonstrating strong investor confidence.
“CATL is not just a battery component manufacturer; we are a system solution provider and are committed to becoming a zero-carbon technology company,” said Robin Zeng, Chairman and CEO of CATL, at the listing ceremony.
“CATL is pioneering zero-carbon economy, innovating in key sectors such as zero-carbon transportation, zero-carbon power system, and industrial decarbonization. This listing signifies our deeper integration into the global capital markets and marks a new milestone in our mission to drive the global zero-carbon economy.”
Last October, CATL launched a major R&D hub in Hong Kong as part of its plans to boost new energy technology innovation and sustainable development in the territory.
The inauguration ceremony of the 800sq metre CATL Hong Kong Research Institute was held on October 15 – almost one year after the battery manufacturer announced plans to invest HK$1.2 billion ($154 million) in the sector and work with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation on developing the institute.
