January 9, 2026: Energy Vault said on January 5 it has started building a 150MW/300MWh BESS in Texas, backed by $300 million from a preferred equity investment from Orion Infrastructure Capital.

The SOSA Energy Center, in Madison County, was originally developed by Savion, a subsidiary of Shell, and acquired by Energy Vault in the fourth quarter of 2025 under its ‘Asset Vault’ subsidiary — which is focused on developing, building and operating energy storage systems.

SOSA wants to start commercial operation in 2027, using the company’s third-generation ‘B-Vault’ tech, delivering critical grid support and renewable integration capacity to Texas.

Energy Vault’s portfolio includes proprietary battery, gravity and green hydrogen energy storage technologies. B-Vault is marketed as a suite of fully-integrated lithium ion-based BESS systems designed for reliability, flexibility, and availability.

“Breaking ground on the SOSA Energy Center so quickly after acquisition demonstrates the velocity with which we are executing and growing Energy Vault’s Asset Vault platform,” chairman and CEO Robert Piconi said.

Energy Vault said last year that its Asset Vault division would accelerate development of 1.5GW of energy storage projects globally.

The subsidiary says it aims to generate more than $100 million in recurring annual EBITDA in the coming three to four years as a consolidated subsidiary — in addition to Energy Vault’s existing ESS business.
