August 16, 2023: Exide Industries’ subsidiary Chloride Metals has launched commercial production of its fourth lead battery recycling plant in India, the group announced on August 14.
The plant — built on a greenfield site spanning more than 15 acres on the Supa-Parner Industrial Park in Maharashtra — has an initial 96,000 million tonnes per annum capacity rising to 120,000 mtpa.
It is the firm’s second such facility in the state.
Exide said consent for the plant to recycle lead acid batteries, lead scrap and to manufacture lead, lead alloys and cast components, was given by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board on August 11.
The launch follows the commercial start in 2022 of Chloride’s third lead recycling facility — the 108,000 mtpa plant in the state of West Bengal.
Chloride’s other recycling plant is in Karnataka.
Batteries International reported earlier this year that Exide had become a member of the Consortium for Battery Innovation.
In March, Exide confirmed it had completed the amalgamation of another subsidiary, Chloride Power Systems & Solutions, which designs and manufactures battery chargers and related equipment.
Exide MD and CEO Subir Chakraborty revealed last month that the group was close to being a $2 billion mid-cap business and was poised to unveil new investments in its core lead acid technology.
