November 24, 2025: Li-S Energy has secured advanced funding of nearly A$8 million ($5.2 million) toward its plans for up to 1GWh of lithium sulfur battery cells production in Australia.

Li-S said on November 18 it had been awarded funding in a grant under the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s advancing renewables program.

The grant supports activities including a feasibility study and front-end engineering design for development of the facility in two stages to become shovel ready.

Li-S said the new plant would represent a 500x increase in production capacity from its existing 2MWh automated advanced pouch-cell production line at Geelong, in the state of Victoria.

For both stages, independent engineering consultants experienced in gigafactory design will be engaged to ensure production targets are credible and use the latest global expertise in the battery manufacturing industry, Li-S said.

The company said the plans come as its proprietary Li-S chemistry and manufacturing processes are now reaching commercial maturity, generating strong interest from partners in the drone, defence, aerospace and marine sectors.

Demonstrating the ability to scale production is a key enabler for customer adoption and offtake agreements, Li-S said, claiming its cells current energy densities of 456 watt-hour per kilogramme are among the most advanced globally.

The company said its recent installation of lithium foil and laminate production capability at its Geelong facility would further strengthen domestic supply resilience and reduce reliance on imported materials.

Li-S said production at Geelong has enabled it to develop automated manufacturing processes to produce and test 10Ah Li-S cells, supporting customer trials and validation.
