Gravita's lead recycling operations span several nations

India-based lead battery recycling group Gravita is considering a potential expansion of its operations in Africa by incorporating a new business in Mozambique, Batteries International can reveal.

Gravita confirmed on October 8 that the enterprise, Green Maputo Recyclers, had been formed through two existing subsidiary units — Gravita Netherlands and Singapore-registered Gravita Global.

Future business opportunities for Green Maputo, formally incorporated on October 2, could include lead recycling in addition to aluminium and rubber, the group said in a filing with the National Stock Exchange of India.

The announcement came just days after Gravita confirmed it had formed another company as a springboard to entering the US market.

Gravita said it was not giving further details about Green Maputo at this stage as the enterprise was newly incorporated and yet to commence business.

However, the move could herald a strategic expansion of operations in the southeast African nation, where the group’s Gravita Mozambique battery recycling business was launched in 2007. That operation is located 15km from Maputo, Mozambique’s capital.

Latest available data shows Gravita Mozambique handles used lead batteries, aluminium and plastics, with an overall recycling capacity of 13,400 tonnes.

The Gravita group also has plastics recycling operations in Tanzania, Ghana, Senegal and India.

In 2023, the group announced the start of commercial production of lead at its battery recycling plant in the West African nation of Togo.
