March 6, 2026: California-based lithium sulfur developer Lyten said on February 27 it had completed its $5 billion takeover of European battery maker Northvolt Sweden.
Batteries International reported last October that Lyten had already put a new management team in place in Sweden and Poland for Northvolt.
The Northvolt Sweden acquisition includes 16GWh of existing battery manufacturing capacity, more than 160 hectares of land, infrastructure and buildings to support expanded manufacturing and industrial activities, in addition to what Lyten said is the largest and most advanced battery research and development center in Europe.
Lyten plans to immediately begin the restart process for Northvolt Ett and Northvolt Labs. Ett will produce lithium ion NMC batteries serving a broadened segment of customers, including BESS, automotive and diverse mobility markets.
Lyten also announced the formation of the Lyten Industrial Hub, located in Skellefteå, at the Northvolt Ett site. The hub will use the infrastructure built by Northvolt and access to abundant, clean hydro power to co-locate battery manufacturing with AI datacenters and complimentary industrial operations of strategic importance to Sweden and the European Union.
The company said it expects commercial sales of cells from Northvolt Ett to supply Lyten’s BESS manufacturing facility in Poland, Northvolt Dwa, in the second half of 2026.
Northvolt Labs in Västerås will continue development of long-life lithium ion NMC cells and will collaborate with the Lyten Silicon Valley team to industrialize Lyten’s Li-S battery technology for gigascale manufacturing.
Meanwhile, EdgeConneX, a global developer of datacenters and a portfolio company of EQT, plans to acquire a datacenter site from Lyten in Skellefteå. The site has potential to scale to a 1GW datacenter campus, which would be one of the largest such facilities in Europe, Lyten said.
