January 19, 2026: Norwegian renewables developer Scatec has signed a record deal to supply a gigawatt-scale BESS and solar facility to Egypt.

Scatec said this includes a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for the total capacity of electricity produced at the 1.95GW solar and 3.9 GWh BESS site.

The combined capacity will be the largest solar and BESS installation in Africa to date and the largest investment in Scatec’s history, the company said.

Details on investment and related costs will be revealed on financial close of the project, in the second half of this year.

However, Scatec confirmed it would be compensated under a 25-year, US$-denominated pay-as-produced PPA linked to the electricity generated by the hybrid system. The plant is to deliver around 6,000GWh of renewable energy annually.

Scatec will be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction, asset management and operations and maintenance services for the projects, although details of the battery chemistry to be deployed was not announced.

Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog said the integration of batteries and solar will provide sustainable, around-the-clock power and grid stabilising services, supporting both the country’s energy transition and the region’s long-term economic development.

Last May, Scatec was named the preferred bidder to build a 123MW/492 MWh grid-balancing BESS facility in South Africa.

Estimated total capex for the Haru BESS, in Free State Province, is ZAR2.2 billion ($120 million), the lion’s share of which will cover Scatec’s engineering, procurement and construction contracts.
