April 24, 2026: Siemens has agreed a €40 million ($47 million) framework deal to support Vulcan Energy’s Lionheart geothermal lithium extraction project in Germany.

Under the terms of the deal, announced on April 20, Siemens will supply engineering, automation, telecoms and building tech systems for the Upper Rhine Valley project at Landau.

Vulcan said the deal is the final major supply agreement for Lionheart — which aims to develop a production capacity of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM), enough for around 500,000 EV batteries annually.

The project will also generate 275GWh of renewable power and 560GWh of heat per annum for local consumers over an estimated 30-year project life.

Vulcan said previously it has a fully contracted lithium offtake for the first 10 years of production with European-focused partners and first commercial LHM production is targeted to start in 2028.

Siemens will be the main automation contractor across the project, including Vulcan’s upstream commercial lithium extraction plant in Landau, which is already under construction and the downstream central lithium plant in Frankfurt.

Siemens’ work will include engineering and delivery of the distributed control system, cybersecurity infrastructure and safety systems.

Siemens was designated as a preferred supplier to Vulcan last year for a period up to December 31, 2035. Siemens Financial Services is investing €67 million as part of an overall financing package of €2.2 billion secured by Vulcan in December 2025.

Vulcan MD and CEO Cris Moreno said: “With construction underway, the stage is set for Vulcan and our key partners to deliver our flagship Lionheart project, which will deliver Europe’s first fully domestic and sustainable lithium supply chain.”
