Portugal-based Greenvolt Power has launched a 200MW/400MWh BESS in Poland, one of the largest such facilities in the country.

The launch, announced on July 30, came just months after Greenvolt agreed plans with China’s BYD Energy Storage to develop up to 1.6GWh of BESS projects in Poland.

The Turośń Kościelna plant is connected to the national transmission grid at 110kV. The BESS comprises 196 containerised battery modules and 49 containerised transformer stations, using LFP technology provided by BYD Energy Storage.

Greenvolt said the BESS can draw electricity from the grid when it is more readily available and feed it back when demand rises, supporting the balancing of Poland’s national power system, the provision of ancillary services and the utilisation of renewable power.

From 2028, the project will also participate in the capacity market under a 17-year contract with a capacity obligation of 170MW, equivalent to 85% of the facility’s power rating.

The milestone follows last month’s inauguration by Greenvolt of the Buj 100MW/290MWh BESS in Hungary.

Greenvolt CEO Weronika Nowak said: “Turośń Kościelna is particularly significant for us because it demonstrates that utility-scale energy storage is becoming a tangible part of Poland’s power system.”
