February 28, 2025: Apatura said on February 26 it had gained planning permission for a 400MW battery storage system in Scotland.
The renewables specialist said the Denny project will span 11 hectares of land near Stirling, but declined to give details of the construction timetable, plans for tenders or battery chemistry to be deployed.
However, the company said the project was the seventh for which it had secured approval in the past year, taking its pipeline of BESS sites given the green light by planning authorities to 1.4GW.
Last October, Apatura said it received permission for a 100MW battery storage site near the city of Dundee in eastern Scotland. This followed approvals for five projects over the past year, including its 700MW Port Glasgow facility.
In November, Batteries International reported that UK National Grid veteran, David Wildash, had joined Apatura as chief strategy officer, with responsibility for boosting the firm’s grid connection portfolio.
Andrew Philpott, chief development officer at Apatura, said: “Our focus on Scotland is central to our vision to harness its renewable energy potential. These latest approvals reinforce Scotland’s strategic advantage in delivering resilient energy infrastructure.”
The Scottish government has set a goal of generating 50% of the country’s overall energy consumption needs from renewables and by 2050 to have decarbonized its energy system almost completely.
