June 20, 2025: Saft is to supply a 1GWh battery storage system for a project under development in Japan’s Fukushima prefecture.

Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, said on June 11 it had been selected by Singapore-headquartered renewables developer, Gurīn Energy, to supply the lithium ion BESS.

The BESS will provide more than 1GWh of energy storage and Saft will also supply related power conversion and management systems.

The BESS will be capable of providing over 240 MW of electricity for four hours and construction is expected to begin in 2026.

“Ours is a ground-breaking project that will substantially contribute to the flexibility of the local, regional and national power grids,” said Ushio Okuyama, Japan country manager for Gurīn Energy.

Vincent Le Quintrec, Saft sales and marketing director for energy storage systems, said Asia is a critical region for the sustained, long-term growth of Saft’s ESS business.

“Saft’s proven long-term record in lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, together with Gurīn Energy’s ambition in renewable project development, will play an important role in Japan’s energy transition.”
