Aesen 116H integrates hybrid propulsion and energy storage systems

The Lehmann Marine battery systems subsidiary of Greece-based lead and lithium battery major, the Sunlight Group, has entered the Chinese market with a commercial partnership.

Sunlight said on October 5 Lehmann had secured its first Asian deployment with the commissioning of its modular CUBE battery system aboard the state-of-the-art hybrid fast crew boat Aesen 116H.

The 42-metre vessel was built in China by Cheoy Lee Shipyards for Singapore-based Aesen. By integrating hybrid propulsion and energy storage systems, Aesen 116H is engineered to optimise engine loading and power utilisation, enabling an estimated 30%-40% reduction in fuel consumption compared with conventionally powered crew boats operating under similar duty cycles

The China deal comes just weeks after Sunlight announced the launch of full operations at the 300MWh per annum capacity battery production line for Lehmann at its Xanthi plant in Greece.

Sunlight CEO Lampros Bisalas said: “Growing demand in Asia for European expertise, innovation, and service throughout the battery lifecycle, opens up significant prospects for a Greek industrial group with a global reach, making this specific partnership a springboard for our further commercial growth in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Sunlight acquired a 51% stake in Lehmann in a “multi-million euro” deal in 2025.

At the heart of Lehmann’s existing product portfolio are two battery systems ― CUBE and AQUBE. CUBE, introduced in 2023, is an air-cooled LFP system with patented cooling technology and a modular, flexible architecture. AQUBE is the firm’s next-generation water-cooled LFP system, which is the successor to Lehmann’s original water-cooled COBRA.
